AP 156 - Shelter in Place

Background

Horizon School Division believes that Shelter in Place is a practical aspect of operations to ensure the safety of students and staff.  Shelter in Place is enacted when there is a need to keep the students and staff in the school due to external conditions which may include: inclement weather, chemical spill, fire or train derailment.

Procedures

Principals shall ensure:

1. Students are gathered from the school grounds.

2. When students and/or staff are at another facility within the town (e.g. rink, pool), that facility shall also go into Shelter in Place. Every reasonable effort will be made to make contact with staff and students who are off-campus.

3. Classes continue, as usual.

4. Principal will announce when the Shelter in Place has been lifted.
