AP 441 - Personal Professional Days

Background

Horizon School Division may provide staff with Personal Professional Days within the school year calendar. Personal Professional Days are recognized by Horizon School Division as a benefit to students and staff to help improve student learning and student and employee wellness. Students are not present or receiving instruction on Personal Professional Days.

Procedures

1. Personal Professional Days shall be directed by the Teacher and may consist of:
1.1. Preparation time;
1.2. Personal professional development; and
1.3. Collaborative professional development.
2. For Support Staff (Secretaries, Occupational Therapists, and Student Counsellors) the days may consist of:
2.1. Assigned duties and responsibilities;
2.2. Employer/Principal directed professional development; and
2.3. Personal professional development.
3. The number of assigned hours on each Personal Professional Day shall be determined by the Employer, respecting the regular school bell schedule, including breaks, and the lunch period.

4. Full-time (1.0 FTE) employees will be required to work all five (5) of the Personal Professional Days.

5. Part-time employees (employees with less than a 1.0 FTE) will be required to work Personal Professional Days, prorated to their percentage of contract.

6. Teachers are expected to be at the place of work during Personal Professional Days.
6.1. The number of assigned hours on each Personal Professional Day shall be determined by the Employer and shall be counted as part of the teacher's total assigned time for the school year.
6.2. A teacher may request to work from home for a maximum of two (2) Personal Professional Days. The teacher shall make the request using the employer's absence management system (Aesop) at least one (1) week prior to the Personal Professional Day.
6.3. All terms and conditions of employment remain in place during an at home Personal Professional Day.
6.4. A Personal Day or Earned Day Off (EDO) shall not be taken the work day prior (Thursday) to or following (Monday) a requested at-home Personal Professional Day.
6.5. Personal Professional Days shall not be exchanged for other non-student days in the calendar.
7. Employees may request other available leaves on a Personal Professional Day.

8. Support Staff (Secretaries, Occupational Therapists, and Student Counsellors) are expected to be at their place of work during Personal Professional Days.
8.1. A Support staff member may request to exchange Personal Professional Days with other non-student days that are not part of their regular work calendar.
8.1.1. The request shall not increase the number of days worked by the employee and shall not incur overtime.
8.1.2. The request must be made to their direct supervisor at least one (1) week in advance. Operational feasibility shall be a consideration of the request.
