AP 409 - Years of Service
Background
Horizon School Division values the years of service and dedication that employees and Trustees provide to the students and the division. In appreciation of this dedicated service, employees and Trustees will be recognized for the years of service they have provided honouring Horizon’s vision of “Creating a better world, one student at a time”.
Procedures
1. Years of service will be recognized beginning at five (5) years of service and continuing in five-year increments. These awards shall be as follows:

Procedures
1. Years of service will be recognized beginning at five (5) years of service and continuing in five-year increments. These awards shall be as follows:
1.1. Five (5) Years – Horizon School Division Commemorative Pin;
1.2. Ten (10) Years – Horizon School Division Commemorative Pin;
1.3. Fifteen (15) Years – Horizon School Division Commemorative Pin;
1.4. Twenty (20) Years – A gift valued at $100 and a Horizon School Division Commemorative Pin;
1.5. Twenty-Five (25) Years – A gift valued at $150 and a Horizon School Division Commemorative Pin;
1.6. Thirty (30) Years – A gift valued at $200 and a Horizon School Division Commemorative Pin;
1.7. Thirty-Five (35) Years – A gift valued at $250 and a Horizon School Division Commemorative Pin; and,
1.8. Forty (40) Years – A gift valued at $300 and a Horizon School Division Commemorative Pin.2. Employees
2.1. Years of service shall be determined by using the original date of hire of the employee’s current contract, regardless of their full-time equivalency with Horizon School Division and legacy divisions. Substitute days/hours will not be included.
2.2. Employees who have left the employ of Horizon School Division will have their previous years of service credited for the purpose of the Years of Service Award.
2.3. Leaves of absence, paid or unpaid, shall be included for the purpose of the Years of Service Award. Employees who are on a leave of absence will be recognized for their service upon their return to work.
2.4. The criteria for the Years of Service Award is used for the determination of this award only and has no correlation to any other dates including: retirement, seniority, pension, vacation accrual, or increments.
2.5. An employee's years of service will be calculated to the end of the current school year and a list of eligible recipients will be forwarded to the school/workplace by May 15, each year for confirmation. Staff will be asked to check the list to ensure accuracy, errors or omissions shall be reported to Central Office by May 31, annually. Any revisions will be verified and these changes will compose the finalized list of award recipients.
2.6. Employees will be recognized for their years of service at Celebration Day and honoured at their school following the event.3. Trustees
3.1. Years of service for Trustees shall include any service with the Horizon School Division Board of Education and legacy divisions.
3.2. In the event that a Trustee was also an employee of Horizon School Division, these years will be included in the total years of service. Years of service will be calculated using the same process outlined above.
