AP 406 - Maternity, Paternity and Adoption Leaves

Background

The Division will grant maternity leave, paternity leave or adoption leave in accordance with The Saskatchewan Employment Act and applicable collective agreements.

Procedures

1.  Maternity/Paternity Leave
1.1.  Every staff member who requires maternity/paternity leave shall make a written application to Human Resources at least four (4) weeks prior to the date specified in the application as the day on which she intends to commence a leave stating the period of the leave requires in accordance with The Saskatchewan Employment Act.
1.2.  All applications for maternity leave shall be accompanied by a certificate from a qualified medical practitioner specifying the estimated date of birth.
2.  Adoption Leave
2.1.  Every staff member who requires adoption leave shall submit a written application to the Human Resources at least four (4) weeks prior to the date of the adoption of the child.  If the employee is unable to give the proper notice, whatever notice is given by Social Services, the adoption agency, or the birth parents, must also be given to the employer.  The estimated date of return should also be included in the application.
2.2.  Applications shall be accompanied by a statement from the adoption agency specifying the details of the adoption.
Human Resources will provide employees all the required forms and information relating to a maternity/paternity or adoption leave upon receiving notification of the employee's intent to access such a leave.

Sample Letter for Professional Staff (teachers):
Please be advised I will be beginning my maternity leave on (insert date).
Should my maternity leave progress as anticipated, it is my intention to process with the parenting leave.  I anticipate returning to teach on (insert date).  Four weeks prior to that date I will, pursuant to The Saskatchewan Employment Act, provide written confirmation on the date or provide written notice of a request for an extension to my leave.
Also, pursuant to The Saskatchewan Employment Act, enclosed is a certificate from my doctor specifying the anticipated date of the birth of my child.
I am aware of the SEB Plan Benefit from the Provincial Bargaining Agreement.  My application (FORM 8-1) is attached.
Sample Letter for Support Staff:
Please be advised I will be beginning my maternity leave on (insert date).
