National Indigenous History Month and Pride Month

Did you know that before European settlers arrived, Indigenous cultures on Turtle Island recognized and accepted the existence of more than two genders? Two-Spirit people were honoured and often served as spiritual leaders, healers and visionaries in their communities.
Following the arrival of colonizers who believed in only two genders, the respect and honour of Two-Spirited people was not recognized by the new western culture. In recent decades, Two-Spirit activists and First Nations have been reclaiming their cultural heritage by raising awareness, fostering understanding, and challenging discriminatory practices.
