Nokomis School's Outdoor Learning Commons - grants and project kick off
February 01, 2022
We are thrilled for Nokomis School - their Outdoor Learning Commons project has been granted $20,000 from Peavey Industries Community Agricultural Grant. Thank you to
Peavey Industries
for this generous support!
Nokomis School's Outdoor Learning Commons will foster learning with a STEAM-based focus in the areas of First Nations Knowledge Content and Agricultural Sustainability. The new space will include an all-season greenhouse, tipi and medicine garden, formal learning area, hands-on learning through exploring vegetation of garden boxes, fruit trees and bushes, pollination garden, and rain garden.
Ms. Erin Richard is Nokomis School's Grade 3 and 4 teacher who spearheaded this project with a written grant application and accompanying video. The project dream is to allow students to gain valuable and authentic learning opportunities.
"Recognizing that learning, playing and growing outside is essential to not only supporting educational outcomes, but empowering children and the communities they live in to build their resilience – to confront change with confidence and thrive, so we can continue to be contributors to our social fabric, intergenerational learning opportunities and environment. We at Peavey Mart are pleased to be supporting the Outdoor Learning Commons at Nokomis School,” said Andrea Lacoursiere, Sponsorships and Community Engagement for Peavey Industries LP.
Peavey Industries, which owns and operates Peavey Marts across the country, grants these funds as part of a national contest to support Community Agriculture projects across Canada. Peavey Industries distributes $100,000 annually to community gardens and projects that support agricultural research and food security.
Since receiving the original Peavey grant of $20,000, the Outdoor Learning Commons project has also been awarded $6,000 through a Nutrien grant and a $1,000 WWF Canada Go Wild School Grant to support the accompanying pollinator garden. To follow along, please see https://www.facebook.com/nokomisschool/ where updates will be posted. Huge thanks to
Nutrien
and to the
World Widelife Federation Canada
!
The project officially kicked off on January 27, 2022 when George and April Longman from George Gordon First Nation and Amanda Moosemay, Instructional Coach, shared their knowledge and smudged the school. What an honour for Nokomis School's students and staff, and what a great way to kick off the project! Thank you George, April, and Amanda.
Anyone interested in supporting the project or sitting on the planning committee is encouraged to contact the school at 306-528-2191.
