The Librarian is responsible for the general operation of
the library to maximize its use as a learning resource center to support
teaching and enhance student learning.
1. ProceduresThe Librarian is directly responsible and accountable to the
Principal.
A. Fostering
Effective Relationships1. The
Librarian communicates effectively to ensure strong relationships with all
stakeholders by:
a) Ensuring
a professional and welcoming library environment;
b) Communicating
effectively with students and staff and keeping the Principal informed;
c) Communicating
to the Principal if he/she is unable to perform his/her duties.
2. The
Librarian’s values and attitudes toward his/her role serve to support the
Principal by:
a) Demonstrating
a positive attitude towards all stakeholders;
b) Building
positive relationships with all stakeholders;
c) Working
independently, organizing and using time effectively;
d) Working
cooperatively with others;
e) Demonstrating
the ability to be flexible;
f) Continuing
to improve his/her effectiveness, expertise and job related skills.
B. Supporting
the Learning Community1. Supports
the decisions made by the Principal in an ethical framework by:
a) Maintaining
confidentiality at all times;
b) Conducting
oneself in a professional and ethical manner;
c) Demonstrating
punctuality and appropriate dress for the school setting;
d) Working
within the policies and procedures of the school and the Division;
e) Respecting
the dignity and rights of students and staff members;
f) Providing
accurate administrative information to stakeholders as directed by the
Principal;
g) Assisting
teachers in orienting students in the use of the library materials;
h) Assisting
teachers to help students develop research skills;
i) Working
with staff in a supportive role to develop a school program which effectively
integrates library and classroom activities;
j) Assisting
with the development of skills related to technology;
k) Assisting
staff and students in the selection of materials suited to their needs and
abilities;
l) Promoting
literacy;
m) Keeping
staff and students informed of new and existing materials;
n) Performing
other related duties as assigned by the Principal.
C. Supporting
School Operations1. Assists
the Principal in the organization and management of the human, physical and
financial resources of the school.
Provides support by:
a) Ensuring
accuracy of all documents within area of responsibility.
b) Implementing
and maintaining the division supported library information system.
c) Maintaining
school accounts regarding loaning of learning resources, assistive
technologies, and other resources.
d) Assisting
with school library budget where required.
e) Assisting
with the organization of student, school and community activities as requested
by the Principal.
f) Verifying
and documenting receipt of supplies, equipment and library related funds
g) Maintaining
current and up to date with required and related technology.
h) Scheduling
library and community use bookings as required.
i) Maintaining
an inventory of all materials and equipment as assigned by the Principal.
j) Ensuring
all library and related resources are in appropriate form and condition.
k) Liaising with
other libraries and agencies to obtain information not available from the
school's collection and ensure that these materials are returned.
l) Other
related duties as assigned by the Principal.
