AP 422 - Teacher Retirement Notification Incentives

Horizon School Division offers two incentives for teachers to provide early notification of their intention to retire.  Each teacher shall access only one of these two incentives.

Early notice of retirement provides additional time for the administration to recruit and hire teachers for available positions.


Superannuation and Temporary Contract Incentive

1.  Upon receipt of notification of the intention to superannuate at a time other than the end of June of a given school year, the Director may request that a teacher enter into a temporary contract for the duration of the school year in which they superannuate.

2.  A teacher who is offered, and agrees to accept the temporary contract, shall not be eligible for an Early Notification Incentive.

3.  These temporary contracts shall not commence earlier than December 1 of the current school year.

4.  In order to be eligible for consideration for this incentive, the teacher must submit her/his resignation, in writing, to the Director or designate, at least 30 calendar days prior to the date of their superannuation/retirement.

Early Notification Incentive

1.  A teacher will be eligible to receive an early notification incentive of $2000.00 providing that she/he:
1.1.  Plans to resign from employment with Horizon School Division effective June 30 of the current school year, or between September 1 and November 30 of the following school year, for the purposes of superannuation;
1.2.  Submits written notification of intent to resign, for the purpose of superannuation, to Horizon School Division, on or before January 31 of the calendar year in which the resignation is to take effect; and
1.3.  Agrees that the Early Notification Incentive will be paid on the last day of the school year if superannuating on June 30, or on November 30 if superannuating between September 1 and November 30.
2.  In the event that a teacher who has provided early notification, as per this procedure, becomes medically unfit for duties 30 days prior to the date superannuation was to commence, and is not able to return to teaching duties before the date of superannuation due to the same condition, then the date of retirement shall be the date on which the teacher becomes medically fit to resume duties as a teacher, or the date of expiration of sick leave benefits, whichever is earlier.

3.  Retroactive notification of resignation will not be considered.

4.  A teacher who takes advantage of this Early Notification Incentive shall not be eligible for any other retirement incentive.
