It was a beautiful day to play!
On June 13, Nokomis School students enjoyed the “At My Best Play Day” from Physical and Health Education (PHE) Canada! The school was one of three schools chosen for the event this year from applicants across the country. A number of games and activity stations were set up around the schoolyard, including an inflatable obstacle course and face-painting stations. Families and community members were welcome to attend, and many of them volunteered to cook and serve lunch. The whole event would not have been possible without the support of the community, including sponsorship items from the Last Mountain Co-op, the Town of Nokomis, Nokomis Pharmacy, Affinity Credit Union, Blair’s Fertilizer, Kirk’s Hardware, Pete Wilson Trucking, Richardson Pioneer, and Green Teal Insurance.
Teacher Erin Richards applied for the event back in April. In the application, she described the school’s creative use of space within the school, community, and outdoors to promote physical health. She included information about how the school promotes emotional well-being and healthy eating through their morning snack program. As part of the day, the school receives a $1000 grant from PHE Canada. Another $1000 grant was provided by Saputo, which also provided a healthy snack for students. The money from these grants will support the school’s snack program and go towards future outdoor play equipment.
Students, staff, and community members enjoyed great weather for the event, and it was a great opportunity for teamwork and collaboration throughout the school.
