November 23, 2018 - A Message from Kevin C. Garinger, Director of Education
November 26, 2018
Learning Improvement Plan (LIP) documents at each of Horizon’s schools help staff and administrators establish strategies to achieve local goals aligned with Horizon’s strategic plan and the provincial Education Sector Strategic Plan (ESSP). Each year, I visit each school along with Superintendent of Student Services, Darrell Paproski, and Superintendent of Learning Services, Crandall Hrynkiw, to review these documents in detail with school administrators. Last week, we began our first LIP review meetings of this school year. On Monday, we travelled to Bulyea School, William Derby School, Nokomis School, and Drake School. On Tuesday, we visited Schell School, Imperial School, Watrous Elementary School, and Winston High School. On Wednesday, while I was in a meeting with Day Star First Nation, Crandall and Darrell conducted LIP reviews in Archerwill School, Rose Valley School, Kelvington High School, and Robert Melrose Elementary School. On Thursday, we met with administrators at Watson School, Quill Lake School, Lakeside Colony School, Wadena Elementary School, and Wadena Composite High School. These meetings will continue over the coming weeks. In each school and in each document, it is apparent how much passion and dedication our staff has for the work they do for our students. And of course, the need to take our thoughts and put them into a plan is critical. As famed French writer Antoine de Saint-Exupéry stated, “A goal without a plan is just a wish”.
On Tuesday, Horizon’s Facility Services team led a meeting with central office staff to share progress information and help staff prepare for our upcoming move into the new administration building. This move will be completed over the holidays so that our staff is prepared for when students and school staff return from the break. Facility Services and Information Services have been busy ensuring that everything is in place for the move in terms of our new office spaces and technology needs. I want to thank everyone for their patience and support as we undergo this transition. We remain very excited about the efficiencies and opportunities that will come with this new space.
On Wednesday, I met with Chief Buffalo and his Counsel to continue our discussions around the tuition agreement between Horizon and Day Star First Nation. Joining us for this meeting were Horizon’s Superintendent of Finance Services/CFO, Marilyn Flaman, and Trustee and Band member, Paul Crow-Buffalo. The foundation of all things good and powerful in education is relationship and the relationship we have with Day Star First Nation is one that I continue to be in awe of. We had an excellent discussion but were focused on finding “win-win” solutions for each party which ultimately meant a huge win for our children and theirs.
SHSAA Boys Volleyball Provincials took place this past weekend. The Horizon Central Athletics Association was well-represented in these provincials, with teams from Middle Lake and Annaheim competing in the 1A category, and Humboldt and Wadena in the 4A category over the weekend. On Friday, I travelled to Three Lakes School in Middle Lake to take part in the opening ceremony of the 1A Boys Volleyball Provincial championships. I joined our Board’s Vice Chair, Linda Mattock, in bringing greetings on behalf of Horizon and our Board. Middle Lake and Lake Lenore did a fantastic job of co-hosting the 1A championships, and Annaheim competed hard in the lost a very difficult bronze medal match. Everyone involved certainly did our school division proud. I want to thank our volunteers, organizers, and communities for a fantastic weekend of sport. I also want to thank our coaches, families, and students for another great volleyball season.
Finally, it is with a very heavy heart that I share the sudden passing of former Horizon student Lloyd Hodgins. Lloyd attended school in Strasbourg and both his parents were teachers and employees of Horizon School Division. I know you join with me in sharing our deepest condolences with Lloyd’s family and friends along with the staff of William Derby School.
Stay #HorizonStrong, everyone.
- Kevin
